The Spearfish Community Coalition partnered with public schools to promote drug free lifestyles through participation in Red Ribbon Week. The National Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week each year.
For Spearfish Middle School, each day of Red Ribbon Week was themed with a new emphasis on being drug free. Students were encouraged to dress up and participate in awareness activities. DARE officers were also in all 7th grade classrooms reinforcing the anti-drug message and all students were given the opportunity to sign a banner that says “I Elect to be Drug Free”, which is hanging in the school commons. Drawings took place throughout the week where prizes including t-shirts, frisbees, and back packs were given away. This was made possible through money provided by the Spearfish Community Coalition and Middle School Student Council.
